From Salt Lake City, UT to Town Creek, AL, Montez grew up in a musical household. With his father (bassist) and mother (singer), as well as a host of uncles and cousins instilling gospel and soul roots from an early age, he was bound to be destined for a music career also. Just like fan favorite artists D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, K-Ci & JoJo, and many more, he got is start in the quartet world with his uncles, The Garner Brothers, right around the age of 13. He spent a lot of hours learning how to play records verbatim to grasp the concept of disciple and dynamics in order to become one of the working musicians in the area.
For the next 5 years or so, he spent a good chunk of his “outside of school life” as a freelance bassist for local artist in the North Alabama area and studying some of the best around that toured with some of our favorite soul and smooth jazz artists. It was long before he realized a move to Orlando, FL would shift the way his music career would go.
Being in Orlando brought many other aspects of the business business to light. While earning a Music Business Bachelors degree from Full Sail University, he developed a relationship with super funk 4x grammy award winning bassist Trae Pierce (Blind Boys of Alabama/ Sugarfoot’s Ohio Players) who took him under his wing to continue shaping his craft. Spent some time touring with the late great legend Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner as a tech for Trae and a second assistant to Sugarfoot opened up many doors a a session and live performance musician. It was here where he learned how to become a front man and develop skills as a music director.
Throughout the past 10+ years living in Orlando has been a lot of success as well as many failures, but his belief in forward thinking and the ability to overcome has played a vital part in the continued success along with his musical versatility on the instrument He spends the majority of his music career developing G.W. Souther (1/4 member of Rock/Pop/Soul Band) while also spending time producing and recording bass guitar for various artist.
While there is much more to accomplish on this music journey, there is great appreciation in where he comes from and what has develop from the time he first picked up the bass guitar.
And it will never stop!
