Michael Rais born and raised in Metro-Detroit, MI, found himself growing up in a very musical surrounding. At the age of six was when his uncle, Roger Rais (bassist) put the bass in his hands and the love and passion for music started to flourish. Michael knew growing up that music was his passion and calling. He knew by the time he was in middle school that he was going to make music his profession. He received a bachelors degree in Music Education from Wayne State University and a masters degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music.
Michael grew up musically learning all different kinds styles of music. His bass heroes include Les Claypool, James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, P-Nut, Edgar Meyer, Charles Mingus and many others. You can hear all these different bass players in Michael's playing. He is a chameleon in the music scene. Being able to adapt to many genres such as classical, jazz, punk, rock, and Motown. Michael plays many different basses like his 4 and 5 string bass, fretless and double bass.
Besides being a freelance bassist performing across the country with legendary musicians such as Eddie Holman, The Reflections, The Contours, The Coasters and many other doo-wop and Motown artists, Michael is the bassist for Motown's The Shades of Blue (hit: "Oh, How Happy"), bassist for Il Segreto String Quartet, South Eastern Michigan Wind Ensemble and studio bassist.
When Michael is not on stage or on the road, he is also a very dedicated and active music educator. He teaches band and orchestra at Frost Middle School in Livonia, MI. He is very involved in music education learning new teaching music techniques, mentoring new music teachers, presenting music sessions to colleagues and students, leading bass workshops, and advocating for music education in schools.
He is a sought-after bassist and musician because of his playing style, tone, and his ability to perform many various genres and styles.
