"The day was very subtle, everything was low-key,
The sky it was so overcast that you could barely see,
And everything slowed down to a slower frequency,
The day the bass players took over the world."
Trout Fishing In America - The Day The Bass Players Took Over The World
The second weekend in November at SIR Studios in Hollywood, CA once again saw bass players from every skill level, genre and continent converge for the annual Bass Player LIVE! event, hosted by Bass Player Magazine/New Bay Media. The frequencies were low, the turnout was high, filled with beginners as well as legends in the industry.
This year, we had the opportunity to showcase a local CA builder (and good friend), Pete Hilton of Hilton Guitars, who brought his sk8bass for display at the booth. Armed with Aguilar DCB pickups, a passive EQ and Big Core Bass strings, the sk8bass turned heads from everyone that walked by. Aside from being visually striking, the sk8bass had a surprise; Hilton built the body of the bass entirely out of stakeboard decks.
For GHS, the highlight was the official unveiling of the Round Core Bass Boomers, which brought a lot of smiles to players who tried them out. Session bassist, Tony Pimental even went so far as to give us a quote!
"I would say 'GHS has done it again,' but, I don't think GHS has ever stopped doin' it! These Round Core Boomers sets are extremely powerful from the Low-B, throughout the entire set in their consistency, definition, brilliance and tone, and man... these strings last and last! Don't just take my word for it; check them out for yourself!!!"
All in all, it was a fantastic weekend to see old friends, meet some new ones, and talk bass. Special thanks go to Dave Avenius and Dave Boonshoft of Aguilar Amplification for supplying us with the Tone Hammer 500 and two SL112 cabinets for demoing, and Pete Hilton of Hilton Guitars for allowing us to showcase his beautiful sk8bass (which will be turning heads at the Hipshot Booth at the 2015 Winter NAMM).
